The most important castle of Verona has not a very original name (Old Castle), but the layers of history it boasts are surprising!
Here in 1944
Galeazzo Ciano, Mussolini's son-in-law and Minister of his government, was sentenced to death by his Fascist comrades in the infamous
Processo di Verona, a still debated joint in post-war Italian history.
Here in 1960s
the enlightened architect Carlo Scarpa made of this Medieval complex, the museum of Castelvecchio in Verona,
a celebrated and sympathetic museum, that many of our visitors come and see from all over the world. A
thought- provoking and super engaging piece of architecture where old and new marvellously go along.
Here is where the
restless spirit of Cangrande II, lord of Verona, from the XIV cent. hovers in the frescoed halls, in the airy gallery, in the red brick clocktower and on top of the crenellated keep overlooking the green meandering river Adige.
Exiting the Castelvecchio museum in Verona you become aware that there are places which catylise meaningful moments in people's history and where hard choices are made.
And you wonder
what you would have done in their shoes...
