Humans of Verona: Chiara, high school teacher

In the Humans of Verona series, Chiara, high-school teacher, shares with us her favorite place on lake Garda.

June 20, 2025

The series Humans of Verona is inspired by Humans of New York, a Brandon Stanton project which we deeply admire.

Chiara has a background in Humanities and owns a Bachelor of Music (piano).
She is very entertaining and you find her around town at every possible cultural event.
Her students imagine  her in front of a fire place reading the classics!

"My favorite place is Pai di Sopra, a small hamlet on the Eastern shore of lake Garda.

My parents own a summer house there.
It is a place where I go in the summer during the school holidays, when the heat in Verona city gets unbearable: this is typical of the Verona people, by the way.

In Pai, as you leave the trafficated road by the lake, you immediately start to go uphill.
Before the limit of the wood, there is a intersection of small, cobblestone streets and paths entering the shady green.

I love that intersection: it is an enchanted spot that looks like a painting.
On your right, you feel a delicate breeze coming from a creek and you hear the bubbling water of an ancient marble fountain, used in the past for washing bed sheets.
If you stop and look back, you still see the lake among the red roofs of the old houses.

It is a very inspirational place to me: I feel suspended and time stops for a while.

As I go up to the tiny San Marco church, and stop on the terrace facing the water, I feel a sense of extreme lightness, like I can fly.

It is a place frozen in time, very archaic and classic!"
